The university has established on May 1, 1983 through the partitioning of Nagpur University. The university covers the five districts with its main departments in Maharashtra, Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal and Washim. The university is recognized by the University Grant Commission section 12B. The university is also a member of the Association of Common Wealth universities , London.
