Career summary
- Test debut v Australia at Mumbai in November 2004
- Gambhir had been a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket with an average of over 50.
- He first made an impact in India when Zimbabwe toured early in 2002 when he scored two double-centuries, one for Delhi and another for the Board Presidents' XI against the visitors. This made him only the fourth Indian batsman to score a double century in a tour game at home.
- Gambhir made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in the TVS Cup in 2003 and was named man of the match in his third game after scoring 71.
- His maiden ODI century came against Sri Lanka in 2005, where he got 103 off 97 balls.
- Gambhir got a call-up into India's Test squad for the fourth Test against Australia in November 2004 scored his first century a few months later against Bangladesh.
- After failing to play a single Test in 2006, he returned to the fold the next year and has since forged an excellent opening partnership with Virender Sehwag.
- He finally confirmed his status as one of India's new Indian stalwarts with a series of brilliant performances during the 2008-09 season. He scored 1269 runs at an impressive 84.60 in the eight Tests he played.
- Those efforts helped him to claim the Test Player of the Year Award.
- More followed as he scored five consecutive Test tons between March 2009 and January 2010.
