Awareness Programme
To create awareness about ill effects of corruption among college students, the Coimbatore District Unit of Anti Corruption Movement will organise a seminar on December 10 at 9.30 a.m. at Sarojini Nataraj Auditorium, Kikani School.
Former Commissioner for Chennai Corporation M.P. Vijayakumar and former Chennai Police Commissioner R. Nataraj will participate.
Over 10,000 titles on display at book fair
The Aksharavarsham Book Fair, organised by the Kerala Book Marketing Society (Bookmark) at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi auditorium here, has been attracting a number of visitors.
The book fair, was inaugurated by Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA.
The exhibition has on display more than 10,000 titles by 25 publishers.
Major participants at the fair include the State Institute of Language, State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications, State Institute of Children's Literature, Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Folklore Academy, Kerala Press Academy, Archaeological Department, Chalachitra Academy, Kerala State Film Development Corporation and various universities.
The display has variety of titles from politics to cookery and religion to language.
Encyclopaedia, travelogues, vocational training, history and biographies have more takers.
Cultural activities
The exhibition is accompanied by a number of cultural activities including Kaviyarangu, performances of folk arts and cultural meetings.
A good number of school students in uniform are also coming to the fair.
Attractive discounts have been offered on all purchases. Libraries and schools are eligible for special rebates. The book fair will conclude on Saturday.
‘Nanotech can't be taught as a course at UG-level'
Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University T.C. Shivashankara Murthy on Thursday said that he did not favour teaching nanotechnology at the undergraduate-level as a separate course.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day international conference on synthetic and structural chemistry at Mangalagangotri.
He said nanotechnology could be taught only as a subject. “Some people talk about introducing nanotechnology as a course at the undergraduate-level. It cannot stand as an independent course,'' he added.
The Vice-Chancellor said: “Don't make it (nanotechnology) an independent discipline. It will spoil science.''
He said the challenge before education and research institutes now was to attract students to basic sciences.
Prof. Murthy said that there were not many women scientists. “Where do they go after completing their studies?'' The focus of Indian Science Congress to be held from January 3 to 7, 2012, at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, would be on women. The theme would be “science and technology for inclusive innovation, role of women”, he said. The Vice-Chancellor said that universities should become a hub of research. Teaching and research should go together.
P.M. Akbarali, Managing Director, Apotex Pharmachem India Pvt. Ltd., said that there was a need to manufacture more drugs which would cure tropical diseases.
There was a need to explore manufacturing of herbal-based medicines in a scientific manner as they would have more shelf-life, he said.
T.N. Guru Row, professor, Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, said that chemistry was the mother of all sciences.
K.A. Suresh, director, Centre for Soft Matter Research, Bangalore, M.R. Gajendragad, former Vice-Chancellor, Kuvempu University, and B. Thimme Gowda, chairman of the conference, spoke.
Science expo from Dec. 12
A district-level science and mathematics expo will be conducted from December 12 to 14 at Holy Mary High School, Saifabad. Selected students can register their entries on www.nschyderabad.com from Thursday.
Education fair
The SNY Cosmos, an overseas education consulting organisation, will organise a European education fair in city on December 10. The venue of the programme is Hotel Gateway on MG road, according to SNY Cosmos Overseas business manager Nikhil.
Seminar on CAT on Sunday
The Triumphant Institute of Management Education Pvt. Ltd. (T.I.M.E.) is conducting a seminar in association with The Hindu Education Plus on the Common Admission Test (CAT) on Sunday. The seminar is being conducted at the BHH Girls' Junior College in Brodipet. The seminar begins at 9:30 a.m.
The objective of the seminar is to make the students aware of the value of doing an MBA with focus on CAT, as it is the first step in getting into most of the top B-schools in the country including the 13 IIMs. Ramnath Kanakadandi, an alumnus of the IIM, Ahmedabad, will speak.
The seminar will be followed by a scholarship test on CAT. More than 400 participants are expected to attend the seminar.
